The President of the Students' Union Government (SUG) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Chisom Samuel Ochuba, has alleged that he and his team were brutally assaulted by UDOGACHI security operatives at an off-campus residential area in Awka. The incident occurred earlier today, March 25, 2026, when Ochuba and his team rushed to the scene to protect students who were being arrested and assaulted by the security personnel.
According to eyewitnesses, the UDOGACHI security operatives were seen attacking students and damaging properties at the residential area, leaving several students injured and traumatized. When Ochuba and his team intervened, they were met with violence and threats. The security personnel allegedly smashed bottles and threatened to shoot the students, saying they were "too powerful" and would not be held accountable for their actions.
Ochuba condemned the brutal assault and called for justice, stating that this was not the first time UDOGACHI security operatives had attacked students. He vowed that it would be the last, warning that the students would no longer tolerate such brutality and would take all necessary measures to protect themselves and their rights. The incident has sparked outrage among students and staff of UNIZIK, with many calling for the immediate withdrawal of UDOGACHI security personnel from the university's environs.
Ochuba has announced plans to take legal action against UDOGACHI and its security operatives, citing the need to protect students' rights and safety. He has also called on the state government to intervene and put an end to the alleged brutality, saying that the students would not be intimidated or silenced. "We will not be bullied or threatened into submission," Ochuba said in a statement. "We will fight for our rights and demand justice for the victims of this brutal assault."
In a statement released on his official Facebook account, Ochuba wrote: "I want to assure every UNIZIK student that we will not rest until justice is served. We will take all necessary steps to ensure that those responsible for this brutal assault are held accountable. I appeal to all students to remain calm and united in this fight for justice. We will not be intimidated or silenced. #JusticeForUNIZIKStudents"
The university administration has promised to investigate the incident and take necessary action. Students have been advised to remain calm and vigilant, and to report any further incidents to the authorities. The administration has also assured students that their safety and security is its top priority and that it will work with the state government to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of students in off-campus residential areas. Many have taken to social media to express their outrage and demand justice for the victims, saying that the actions of the UDOGACHI security operatives are unacceptable and should not be tolerated. The hashtag #JusticeForUNIZIKStudents has gone viral on social media, with many calling for the authorities to take swift action.
Ochuba's bravery in standing up to the UDOGACHI security operatives has been widely praised, and many are calling for him to be commended for his leadership and commitment to protecting students' rights. The SUG president has become a symbol of resistance against oppression and brutality, and his actions have inspired many to speak out against injustice.
The incident is a test of the university's commitment to protecting its students and upholding their rights. It remains to be seen how the administration will respond to the situation and whether it will take concrete steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
