OOU Students Stand Up Against Police Brutality
By Kehinde Odinde
Students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) have taken a bold stand against police brutality, protesting the alleged assault and unlawful detention of their colleagues by officers of the Oru-Ijebu police command. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.
According to eyewitnesses, the students' union legal director was physically assaulted, kicked, and manhandled while trying to verify the situation at the police station. Another student was also slapped by officers, further escalating the situation.
The students' union, led by President Kehinde Bamgbose and General Secretary Olajire Emmanuel, condemned the "disturbing and inhumane actions" by the police, alleging that students were subjected to assault, unlawful arrest, and gunfire. The union demanded an immediate investigation, prosecution of officers involved, medical treatment and compensation for injured students, and the unconditional release of detained students.
The protest, which began on Sunday, has seen students gathering at the police station to press home their demands. The traditional ruler of the community and the university's vice-chancellor have addressed the protesters, calling for calm and peaceful resolution.
The students' bravery in the face of police brutality is commendable, and their demands for justice are legitimate. The use of teargas and force against unarmed students is unacceptable and an affront to human rights.
The Ogun State Police Command has claimed that the students attacked the police station, but eyewitnesses and video evidence suggest otherwise. The police must respect the rights of students to peaceful protest and engage in dialogue rather than resorting to violence.
The university's management must also take responsibility for ensuring the safety and well-being of its students. The chief security officer's alleged failure to protect students and taking sides with the police is unacceptable.
The incident has sparked concerns about police brutality and human rights abuses in Nigeria. The students' union has vowed not to tolerate harassment, assault, or dehumanization of its members, and the international community must take notice.
The OOU students' stand against police brutality is a testament to the power of youth activism and the fight for justice. We must stand with them and demand accountability from the authorities.
