By Kehinde Odinde
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), has urged Nigerian students to harness research, innovation, and patriotism to tackle the country's growing security challenges. Speaking at the Student Mentorship Summit (SMS ’26) in Abuja, organised by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the Defence Minister emphasised the pivotal role of students in national development.
Comrade Olushola Oladoja, NANS President, said the summit aimed to empower students with cross-sector mentorship in tech, aviation, security, and anti-drug/cybercrime advocacy. "We are committed to equipping our members with the skills and knowledge needed to drive positive change in Nigeria," he said.
Comrade Oladoja highlighted the importance of youth involvement in shaping the country's future, noting that students are key stakeholders in Nigeria's development. He thanked the Defence Minister and other stakeholders for their support and commitment to student development.
Representing the Defence Minister, Special Adviser Olusanya Bankole urged students to seize opportunities, including interest-free loans through NELFUND. He stressed that mentorship, patriotism, and discipline are key to addressing insecurity.
"You are not the leaders of tomorrow; you are the leaders of today," Bankole said, encouraging students to take ownership of their roles in national development. He highlighted the importance of local security, sharing a poignant story of a woman rescued from Sambisa Forest.
Comrade Adeyemi Samson Ajasa, NANS Public Relations Officer, noted that the summit was a huge success, with students from over 50 universities in attendance. "The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, and we are confident that the skills and knowledge gained will be applied to drive innovation and address security challenges in Nigeria," Ajasa said.
Hon. Sunday Asefon, Special Assistant to the President on Students’ Engagement, advised students to stay focused, noting President Tinubu's commitment to improving student welfare and access to quality education. The event featured awards for notable contributors to education and student welfare.
The Defence Minister's call underscores the need for a whole-of-society approach to address security challenges. Students are being urged to take an active role in ensuring national security, collaborate with government agencies, civil society, and other stakeholders, and drive innovation to lead Nigeria towards a brighter future.
The NANS summit provided a platform for students to engage with leaders, experts, and peers, and to develop the skills and networks needed to succeed in their chosen fields, marking a significant step towards empowering Nigerian youth to drive positive change.
