The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) leadership has defended the appointment of Cader Oladele Kenko as ICPC Chairman, citing a presidential inner-cycle alliance among zones. The move has sparked intense debate among NANS members, with some questioning the traditional shift in the norm. However, the leadership believes it's a strategic move that will ensure a smooth convention and a brighter future for the association.

According to a statement released by Amb SA Lukman, the appointment is a prerogative power of the NANS President, with no constitutional provision dictating where the chairman must come from. The leadership cites examples of previous transitions, including the tenure of Asefon Sunday Dayo, where Agbabiaka Ahmed Agba from Zone D was appointed ICPC Chairman, and Leader Tochukwu Asubieke (OO) from Zone F was appointed Secretary.

The statement emphasizes that the association remains one big family and urges members to remain calm and focused on the upcoming convention. The incumbent NANS President, Comr. Olushola Oladoja's, consistent leadership and broad acceptance among students are highlighted as key factors in the decision. "His administration has remained remarkably consistent in administrative sensitivity," the statement reads.

The ICPC Chairman has no role in the election process, and the Convention Chairman is the principal umpire. This means that Kenko's appointment will not affect the outcome of the elections. Instead, it will bring much-needed expertise and experience to the ICPC. The leadership assures members that the ICPC under Dele Kenko will neither victimize nor favor anyone and will not cover any mess.

The statement references previous transitions, including Barambu's tenure, where Carol "the General" from Zone A was appointed ICPC Chairman, and Comr. Akwaowo Clifford Ukpong from Zone B was appointed Secretary, nominated by then Senate President Felix. The NANS leadership will briefly assess the presidential aspirants for the 2026 convention in the coming days.

The association is committed to conducting a free, fair, and transparent election, and the ICPC will play its role in ensuring a successful convention. The leadership concludes by urging NANS members to remain focused on the upcoming convention and to support President Oladoja's vision for a better NANS.

The appointment has sparked concerns about the future of NANS, with some members calling for greater clarity on the appointment process. However, the leadership believes it's a step in the right direction. "The presidential inner-cycle alliance among zones is a clever move that promotes unity and cooperation," the statement reads.

The NANS leadership emphasizes that the ICPC Chairman is not directly responsible for the conduct of elections. The Convention Chairman, elected by accredited senators and delegates, is the principal umpire. The statement notes that Zone D has consistently been missing in heading committees, but has cooperated without raising any eyebrow, reinforcing the spirit of collective responsibility and internal harmony within the association.

The leadership highlights the various ad-hoc and special committees constituted under Oladoja's watch, each headed by notable and competent figures drawn from different zones. These include the Inauguration Committee, Special Committee on Drug Abuse Campaign, and the Task Force Committee on the abusive use of NANS plate numbers.

The NANS leadership is confident that the association will emerge stronger and more united after the convention. The statement concludes by urging members to keep their eyes on the ball and reserve energy for the bigger battle ahead.

The appointment of Cader Oladele Kenko as ICPC Chairman is seen as a bold move by President Oladoja to promote unity and cooperation among NANS members. The leadership believes it's a step in the right direction and will ensure a successful convention.

The NANS leadership will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the association remains a strong and united voice for Nigerian students.
