The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by President Comrade Olushola Oladoja, has welcomed the restoration of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Students' Union, hailing it as a landmark victory for Nigerian students. The union's elections, held on March 6, 2026, produced a new President, Bolaji Akinpelu, and General Secretary, Daniel Solomon, marking a new era in student leadership and activism in the country.

"NANS commends the UNILAG management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola, for honouring their commitment to student representation," said Oyewole Michael Oludare, Chief Press Secretary to the NANS President. "This is a victory for every Nigerian student, a testament to the power of collective action and advocacy."

The new leaders were elected through a transparent process overseen by the Directorate of Student Affairs, with NANS noting the high turnout and enthusiasm of students who participated in the elections. NANS congratulated Akinpelu and Solomon, urging them to serve with integrity, diligence, and a commitment to the welfare of their peers. The association reaffirmed its commitment to championing student rights and welfare, and supporting the new leadership in their efforts to address pressing student issues.

Akinpelu, a student of the Faculty of Arts, and Solomon, a student of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, are expected to hit the ground running, tackling issues such as student accommodation, academic policies, and campus life. They have a mandate from their peers to drive positive change and create a better university experience for all.

The restoration of the Students' Union is seen as a significant development for student activism and leadership in Nigeria, with NANS expecting the new leaders to be responsive to the needs of students and to work collaboratively with the university management to achieve tangible results.

Comrade Oladoja commended the efforts of students who participated in the elections and those who worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth transition. He also thanked the UNILAG management for their commitment to student welfare, noting that this development is a testament to the power of partnership and dialogue.

Oyewole Michael Oludare added that the association is proud of this achievement and looks forward to working with the new UNILAG Students' Union leadership. "This is a new chapter in the history of UNILAG and NANS, and we are excited to see the impact of the new leadership on student activism and leadership in Nigeria," he said.

The NANS President has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting student leaders and advocating for the rights of Nigerian students. The association will continue to work with universities across the country to promote student representation and leadership development, and to ensure that the voices of Nigerian students are heard.

The UNILAG Students' Union's restoration is expected to have far-reaching implications for student activism and leadership in Nigeria, with NANS eager to see the impact of the new leadership on campus life, academic policies, and student welfare.
