NANS DEMANDS IMMEDIATE DISBURSEMENT OF NELFUND LOAN,QUESTION SUDDEN EASTER BREAK DIRECTIVE.
Press Release
The attention of National Association of Nigerian students(NANS), Zone C(North Central) was drawn to the directives and approval of the committee of Deans and Directors (CDD) in Joseph Sarwan Tarka University,Makurdi,Conveyed in a memo with Ref. R/UAM/ADM/03 Dated 23rd March, 2026.
The directive from the CDD for students to vacate the hostels by 6:00pm same day and embark on a 2 weeks Easter break remains questionable, one would ordinarily think the break is to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ according to the Christian faith but with the evacuation order conveyed in the memo,it is a calculated plan to silence the students who are peacefully agitating for their rights.
NANS have also received several complaints about the delay and non compliance of the bursary department to disburse the Nelfund loan to the beneficiaries.
The sum of Fifty Eight Million, one Hundred and Forty Thousand, four Hundred and Ninety Naira (58,140,490.00) was disbursed to the school management through the bursary for the 2025/2026 academic session and same was acknowledged by the bursar in a letter of confirmation to the managing director of NELFUND with ref no: JOSTUM/BUR/FIN/227 dated 30th January 2026.
Looking at the time this money was released and the refusal to disburse this funds to the students beneficiaries,it confirms the lackadaisical attitude of the bursary department towards the welfare of the students who by this singular act of theirs have put the students academic journey on a time bomb and same is highly condemnable.
We also received with evidence the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the students and the management team, which the bursar agreed to refund all beneficiaries in full on or before the 17th of March,2026 which he has also failed as agreed.
The aim of Nelfund is provide financial assistance to Nigerian students in tertiary institutions
NANS remain the umbrella body of all Nigerian students both home and in the diaspora which is saddled with the responsibility of advocation for the advancement of quality education and the protection of the rights, welfare and interest of all Nigerian students, the delay in the disbursement has cause a lot for our students and we wish to state unequivocally:
1. That, the 690 beneficiary of NELFUND for the 2025/2026 be reimbursed in full before the expiration of the Easter break(7th April,2026)
2. That, all beneficiaries(690 students) be included in the refund, whether they have paid their fees or not,the bursar is expected to reconcile the list of beneficiaries and update NANS on day to day progress made.
3. That, the Easter break as approved by the committee of Deans and Director should not be extended beyond the time stated in the memo(7th April,2026).
4. That,we enjoin all students concerned to remain calm,as we will not close an eyelid on this matter even though we peace and negotiation first.
5. That,we will not hesitate to approach a court of competent jurisdiction to interprete to us the aim, mission and vision of Nelfund and all matters therein.
6. That, failure to meet our demands we will be left with no option than to mobilize our members and relocated the headquarters of NANS to Joseph Sarwan Tarka University Makurdi and to establish a branch of "university of street" as established by our leader and the then President of NANS in 2020 to drive home this demands.
