Bwala Fires Back at Al Jazeera Over Edited Interview
By Adesakin Adefemi
Daniel Bwala, Presidential Spokesperson on Policy Communication for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is facing backlash after an Al Jazeera interview where he was confronted with past criticisms of the President. Bwala claims the edited version of the interview, which aired on March 5, created a misleading narrative that sparked incorrect opinions on social media.
The interview, supposed to last one hour and 20 minutes, was cut down to 49 minutes, omitting crucial context, according to Bwala. This led to Nigerians criticizing him for appearing to contradict previous statements, with some calling him an embarrassment to the nation.
Bwala insists the full video should be published to provide proper context, accusing Al Jazeera of "opposition research-style journalism". The controversy surrounds his past criticisms of President Tinubu, made before joining the administration. During the interview, Al Jazeera journalist Mehdi Hasan confronted Bwala with these statements, prompting him to deny making them.
Hasan produced video evidence, further fueling the backlash. Bwala defended his performance, stating he wasn't informed his past comments would be discussed. He praised Hasan as "arguably the best debater on the planet" while accusing him of not doing his job well.
Bwala has since issued a statement, saying he had no regrets defending the administration and would do so again anywhere. He claimed the interview was initially about security, economy, and corruption, but Al Jazeera never mentioned probing his past.
The incident has sparked heated debate, with some Nigerians calling for Bwala's resignation, while others defend him, arguing the interview was an "ambush".
