An Open Letter to the Governor of Kwara State on Security Vote and the Rising Wave of Insecurity
Your Excellency,
AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq
Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum,
I write to you not just as a concerned citizen but in my capacity as the PDP Youth Leader of Kwara State, speaking on behalf of many young people and residents who are increasingly alarmed by the deteriorating security situation across our communities. In recent weeks, disturbing incidents of kidnapping, killings, and attacks have been reported in places such as Babanla, Hahun, Oyate, and Oke-Oyan. Communities that were once peaceful are now living in fear, while farmers, traders, and ordinary citizens can no longer move freely without the anxiety of abduction or violence.
Your Excellency, the issue that continues to raise serious questions among the people is the security vote under your administration. Available budget documents show that about ₦350 million was allocated for security vote in the state’s fiscal provisions, funds specifically meant to support security operations, intelligence gathering, and emergency responses to threats across the state. (Sahara Reporters) These funds exist primarily to ensure that the government can act swiftly and decisively to protect lives and property. However, the persistent rise in insecurity across several parts of the state has led citizens to ask a legitimate question: how exactly are these security votes being spent, and why do the results not reflect the enormous responsibility attached to them?
Security votes are meant to strengthen collaboration with security agencies, support local intelligence networks, and provide rapid response to threats. Yet, the reality on the ground tells a troubling story. Rural communities remain vulnerable, kidnappers continue to operate with boldness, and many residents feel abandoned by the very system meant to protect them. When a government receives public resources specifically designated for security, the people naturally expect visible outcomes, safer roads, protected communities, and proactive strategies that prevent attacks before they occur.
Your Excellency, your current position as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum is a significant national responsibility and a proud recognition for Kwara State. However, the average citizen in the villages and towns of our state asks a simple but important question: what direct benefit has this national prominence brought to the security and welfare of the people at home? Leadership at such a high level should translate into stronger collaboration with federal security institutions and innovative strategies that directly improve the safety of our people.
The people of Kwara State deserve transparency, accountability, and results. At a time when insecurity is threatening livelihoods and creating fear across communities, it is important that the government provides clearer explanations on the management of the security vote and outlines concrete steps being taken to reverse the current trend. Security must never become a political talking point; it is a fundamental responsibility of government.
Your Excellency, this letter is written in the spirit of democratic accountability and the genuine desire to see our state regain the peace and stability it once enjoyed. The people are not asking for too much; they simply want to live without fear. The security vote exists for this purpose, and history will judge every administration by how well it protects its people.
Respectfully,
Adio Odunjo Obbo-Ile
PDP Youth Leader, Kwara State
