Security Operatives Attempt to Detain Former Kaduna Governor El-Rufai at Abuja Airport

A tense scene unfolded at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday when security operatives allegedly attempted to detain former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, as he disembarked from a flight from Cairo, Egypt. Witnesses described the atmosphere as charged, with airport staff and travelers watching closely as the incident developed.

According to his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai refused to accompany the operatives, demanding a formal written invitation before complying with any request. Adekeye further alleged on social media that the security agents seized the former governor’s international passport from one of his aides, escalating concerns over the legality of their actions.

“As he arrived, security agents approached him, but Malam El-Rufai declined to follow them without a formal invitation. They, however, snatched his international passport from an aide,” Adekeye stated, adding that the former governor remained calm but firm in asserting his rights.

As of Thursday evening, no official confirmation or statement had been issued by any security agency regarding the attempted detention. The silence from authorities has fueled speculation, with political observers warning that such incidents could heighten tension in an already charged political environment.

The airport episode comes just a day after El-Rufai, in an interview with BBC Hausa, warned that he could be arrested in Nigeria at any time. He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of pressuring opposition figures to either align with the party or face political persecution, describing the climate as “dangerously intolerant.”

El-Rufai also alleged that several of his close associates had already been targeted. “Four people we worked with in Kaduna have been arrested; so it’s only a matter of time before they come for me too,” he said, suggesting that a broader crackdown on dissenting voices may be underway.

Political analysts say the reported airport incident, if confirmed, could deepen concerns about Nigeria’s democratic space, particularly as political realignments gather momentum ahead of future elections. They note that any attempt to intimidate former governors or opposition figures risks eroding public confidence in governance and security institutions.

Observers further caution that such confrontations between former state officials and security agencies could deepen mistrust in governance and raise critical questions about the rule of law, due process, and the politicization of security operations.

Efforts to reach security agencies for comments were unsuccessful as of press time, leaving the public awaiting an official statement on the alleged attempted arrest. Meanwhile, civil society groups have called for transparency, urging authorities to clarify the matter and avoid actions that could be perceived as political intimidation.
