President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander‑in‑Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, led the nation in solemn commemoration of Nigeria’s fallen heroes during the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) 2026, held at the National Cenotaph, Eagle Square, Abuja. The ceremony was a moment of national gratitude for officers and men who gave their lives defending the country’s peace, unity, and sovereignty.

Representing the President was Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, who laid a wreath on behalf of His Excellency in honour of the brave personnel who paid the ultimate sacrifice a gesture underscoring the Federal Government’s highest respect for military and security martyrs. Tinubu was in the United Arab Emirates attending Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026.

Joining the Vice President in laying wreaths were the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, AFM; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, NAM; other Service Chiefs; and the Inspector‑General of Police a unified display of the Armed Forces’ reverence for those who fell while upholding national security and dignity.

The solemn tribute also included senior officers from various security agencies, a clear signal that the sacrifices of all law‑enforcement and defence personnel, regardless of service, are nationally acknowledged and cherished. The ceremony was marked by a moment of silence, the sounding of the Last Post, and the playing of the national anthem.

Among the distinguished attendees were the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio; the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere‑Ekun; the Honourable Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa, OFR; members of the Federal Executive Council, heads of diplomatic missions, senior serving and retired officers, and members of the Nigerian Legion.

In a moving address delivered by the Vice President, President Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s resolve to honor the memory of the fallen through tangible support for their families, improved welfare for serving personnel, and continued investment in modernizing Nigeria’s defence and security architecture pledges that echo his Renewed Hope Agenda.

CDS General Oluyede described the weight of the nation’s gratitude to the fallen as “incalculable,” urging Nigerians to wear the remembrance emblem with pride and to reject divisive rhetoric reminding all that freedom is never free and that the blood of heroes sustains the peace we enjoy today.

Former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (rtd.), now Nigeria’s Ambassador to Benin, delivered a lecture at the National Symposium on “Securing Nigeria’s Future,” calling for a significantly expanded and well‑equipped Nigeria Police to take over routine internal security  allowing the military to focus on high‑intensity combat and external defence.

The 2026 AFCRD also featured the presentation of prestigious awards to serving and retired officers, including the Service and Sacrifice Award to Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, the Legacy Award to Lt. Gen. Buratai, the Gallantry Award to Brig. Gen. Musa Uba, and posthumous honours to late Colonel B. Umaru and Lt. Col. Thomas Ebisingha‑Alari recognizing valour, innovation, and enduring service.

As the national anthem faded and bugles sounded the Last Post, thousands stood in silent prayer a moment that reminded all present that the legacy of Nigeria’s fallen heroes lives on in the courage of those who continue to wear the uniform, and in the grateful hearts of a united, resolute nation. May their souls rest in eternal peace.
