Abuja, Nigeria - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light for commercial oil drilling operations at Tongeji Island in Ogun State, marking a significant milestone in the country's energy sector. This strategic move is expected to unlock the vast economic potential of the region, create new job opportunities, and stimulate local entrepreneurship.
Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun praised the President's approval, citing it as a testament to Ogun State's potential and the government's commitment to unlocking economic growth in coastal communities. "This approval is a game-changer for Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole," he said. "We are poised to leverage this opportunity to drive economic development, improve the lives of our people, and contribute to the nation's economic growth."
The approval also includes the go-ahead for the Olokola Deep Seaport project, now known as the Blue Marine Economic Zone, expected to transform the state into a major logistics hub. The project is anticipated to decongest the Lagos ports, provide a vital alternative logistics corridor, and leverage the state's strategic coastal advantage.
The Nigerian Navy's Forward Operations Base at Tongeji Island will strengthen border security, protect emerging oil activities, and safeguard the state's territorial integrity. The Governor expressed appreciation for the Navy's support and reaffirmed the state's commitment to collaborating with security agencies to ensure peace and stability in the region.
Ogun State government reaffirmed its commitment to providing amenities for island communities and improving infrastructure, healthcare, and education. "We will work tirelessly to ensure that the benefits of these projects trickle down to our people," the Governor said.
The development is seen as a boost to the state's economy and a testament to the government's efforts to diversify revenue streams. With this approval, Ogun State is poised to become a significant player in Nigeria's energy sector, attracting foreign investment, and stimulating economic growth.
As the state embarks on this new journey, Governor Abiodun urged all stakeholders to seize the opportunities presented by these projects and contribute to the state's development. "Together, we can make Ogun State a beacon of prosperity and development in Nigeria," he said.
