Soludo Orders Shutdown of Onitsha Main Market Over 'Monday Sit-at-Home'

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered the shutdown of Onitsha Main Market for one week due to the ongoing economic sabotage disguised as "Monday sit-at-home." This decision applies to any market in Anambra that observes the Monday sit-at-home, effective immediately.

Governor Soludo emphasized that this action was taken to protect the state's economic interests and the livelihoods of its people. He urged traders and market stakeholders to ignore calls for the sit-at-home and resume business as usual, stressing that no individual or group has the right to disrupt the lives and livelihoods of Anambra residents

Soludo warned that his government would not tolerate any further economic sabotage and would take necessary measures to ensure the security and safety of lives and property in the state. He called on residents to continue their normal business activities without fear, assuring them that the government is committed to protecting the economy and making Anambra a hub for business and investment.

The governor's decision is part of efforts to curb the Monday sit-at-home practice, which has been ongoing for four years, resulting in significant economic losses. The state government has introduced pro-rata salary payments for civil servants who fail to report to work on Mondays, aiming to discourage absenteeism and promote productivity.

Soludo's administration has been working to improve security and boost economic activity in the state. He recently announced plans to launch a military operation, Operation Udo Ga Achi, to tackle insecurity and has introduced measures to eliminate extortion at roadblocks.

The shutdown of Onitsha Main Market is expected to have significant economic implications, and traders are advised to comply with the governor's directive. The state government has assured residents that it is committed to finding a lasting solution to the Monday sit-at-home issue.
