ONLY THE EDUCATED UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF EDUCATION: AND HOW GOV. ABDULRAHMAN ABDULRAZAQ’S LEADERSHIP HAS FAILED KWARA STUDENTS

Only those who have passed through higher institutions truly understand the value of education and the danger of needless distractions to academic programmes. It is therefore deeply unfortunate—and indeed tragic—how students are being treated under the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (AA) in Kwara State.

Kwara State today suffers from a dangerous combination of absentee leadership and a one-man show style of governance. This pattern has dragged what was once a peaceful and harmonious state into an atmosphere of fear, terror, and uncertainty.

It is on record that Governor AbdulRazaq spends more time outside Kwara State than within it, neglecting the very responsibility for which he was deceptively presented to the people as their leader.

Under this administration, governance has been reduced to paralysis whenever the governor is away.

The Deputy Governor and Commissioners have been rendered largely irrelevant, unable to take decisive actions in the interest of the people unless the governor is physically present. As a result, government stands still once he is absent. At a point, it was widely reported that Kwara State was being governed via WhatsApp, a shameful symbol of the decline in seriousness, structure, and reputation of our dear state.

A former Senator from Kwara Central once accurately described this administration as a regime of mediocrity—one that plunged Kwara from a state of harmony into a field of banditry, kidnapping, and senseless killings. Today, that assessment rings louder than ever.

The most recent assault on Nigerian students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, as witnessed by the public, further defines the misplaced priorities of the Kwara State Government on education and youth development. One is forced to ask: what logic supports the shutdown of a tertiary institution for three weeks simply to accommodate NYSC camping activities?

A government that truly understands the value of higher education would never distract undergraduates preparing for examinations, nor disorganize academic calendars, simply to host graduates preparing for voluntary national service. A responsible administration would have sought equilibrium by providing a credible alternative—especially considering its failure to secure the NYSC camp at Yikpata.

The humiliation meted out to Nigerian students represents the peak of administrative rascality. It appears this government sees students as expendable, allowing them to be assaulted and molested by trigger-happy operatives of the Nigerian Police Force while they legitimately protest a senseless and poorly thought-out decision.

Let it be stated categorically: only those with higher institution qualifications truly understand the value of education and the necessity of zero distraction for students preparing for examinations.

Education runs on time, structure, and focus—once disrupted, the damage is often irreversible.

The Kwara State Government should honestly admit its incompetence and formally request the relocation of NYSC camping activities to a neighbouring state, rather than inflicting avoidable hardship, assault, and psychological trauma on Nigerian students.

Time is of essence in educational programmes. It is unintelligent and unwise to delay millions for the convenience of thousands. No society progresses by sacrificing its students on the altar of administrative laziness and poor planning.

History will remember those who stood against this injustice—and those who enabled it.
