Nurse's Violent Assault Allegations Spark Tensions at FMC Abeokuta as Police Probe Begins
By Adesakin Adefemi
A controversy is brewing at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta, Ogun State, following allegations of violent assault leveled against the Head of Nursing Services, Fagoyinbo Abosede, by a senior nurse, Odusola Oluwakemi. The incident has sparked heated discussions within the nursing community and the wider public, with many calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.
Odusola, who was present at a meeting where the alleged assault took place, has called for a thorough investigation to clear her name and that of the hospital, dismissing the allegations as a "deliberate attempt at blackmail". She maintains that she did not engage in any behaviour that would warrant such a reaction and is seeking support from her colleagues and the public to get justice.
However, the Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF) has petitioned the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, demanding Fagoyinbo's arrest and prosecution for alleged assault and attempted murder. The group claims Odusola was violently pushed, lost consciousness, and bled from the mouth, nose, and ears, and later suffered further threats while on sick leave. The ENF has expressed solidarity with Odusola, calling for justice and protection for nurses who are often vulnerable to such attacks.
The ENF cited relevant sections of the Criminal Code on assault, grievous harm, and attempted murder, and urged the police to take immediate action. They also called for a thorough investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable.
Fagoyinbo has denied the allegations, describing them as "false, malicious, and unbalanced." She maintains that the meeting was a routine discussion and that Odusola's claims are baseless. She has expressed confidence in the investigation process and is willing to cooperate with authorities to clear her name.
An officer at FMC Abeokuta dismissed the allegations as fabricated, questioning the legitimacy of the ENF. "They are just trying to cook lies here. Something like that did not happen in the centre; they just want to scatter the place," the officer said. However, the hospital management has confirmed that the matter is under investigation, amid growing tensions within the nursing community and the wider public.
The investigation is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and determine the truth. The police have assured the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and justice will be served.
The outcome of the investigation is awaited, as the controversy continues to spark heated discussions. The nursing community is watching closely, calling for a fair and transparent investigation. The incident has highlighted concerns about the safety and well-being of healthcare workers and the need for a safe and supportive work environment.
The ENF has called on the public to support Odusola and the nursing community in their quest for justice and protection. They have also urged the authorities to take immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future.
