NANS WELCOMES RELEASE OF 52 EDO PROTESTERS — PRAISES GOBERNOR OKPEBHOLO’S WISDOM, CALLS FOR DIALOGUE OVER CONFRONTATION
By Adesakin Adefemi
Comrade Oladoja Olushola, GCNS, National President of NANS, confirms the unconditional release of all 52 youths detained during recent protests in Edo State 38 of whom are students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, and 14 community youth after successful negotiations led by NANS leadership and supported by key federal and state officials.
NANS’ investigative profiling revealed that 38 of the arrested persons were registered students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Ekpoma, while 14 were non-student youth from surrounding communities who joined the peaceful demonstration. NANS treated all 52 as one group “our brothers and sisters” and negotiated their collective freedom and the withdrawal of all charges.
NANS commends His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, for his statesmanship, open-mindedness, and willingness to sit down with student leaders instead of resorting to force. His decision to listen not lock set a new standard for resolving youth grievances through dialogue and de-escalation.
This outcome proves that when authorities choose negotiation over confrontation, peace prevails. NANS urges all tiers of government to adopt this model, recognising that student and youth demands, when expressed peacefully, deserve serious consideration, not suppression, to avoid chaos and protect public order.
NANS thanks the State Security Service (SSS), Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Hon. Olawande Emmanuel Ayodele (Minister of Youth Development), Dr. Paddy Iyamu (Edo Commissioner of Education), and Hon. Asefon Sunday Dayo (SSA to the President on Student Engagement) for their timely mediation, their involvement was crucial in building trust and fast-tracking the release.
Although NANS pushed for immediate release, it insisted on proper documentation and verification to ensure only the correct individuals were freed a responsible approach to protect both students and public safety. No one was released without full confirmation of identity and innocence.
Special appreciation goes to Comrade Yakubu Peter Odion (NANS JCC Edo State Chairman) and Comrade Osadebamen Ainyanbhor Ehizojie (SUG President, AAU Ekpoma) for their courage and coordination on the ground. Also, gratitude to all Nigerian students and civil society partners who stood in solidarity.
While defending the right to protest, NANS condemns looting, destruction, and criminality masquerading as activism. Students must always uphold dignity, lawfulness, and peaceful expression anything less risks our collective future and invites repression.
NANS remains committed to working hand-in-hand with state and federal authorities to advance student welfare, youth empowerment, and national development. We call on all young Nigerians to channel energy into constructive dialogue because peace, progress, and prosperity begin with us.
