The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ondo State Joint Campus Council (JCC), has taken a bold step in championing mental health advocacy and combating substance abuse among young people. In a strategic meeting with the Honourable Minister of Youth, Hon. Ayodele Olawande, the Chairman of NANS ONDO JCC, Comr. Adekanye Mayomi Adeboye, emphasized the urgent need for collective action against the growing dangers of drug abuse and rising cases of depression and suicide among youths.

The visit was part of the ongoing “Say No to Drug Abuse, Say No to Suicide” campaign, which aims to promote hope, support, and access to guidance that helps young people make healthy life choices. The Chairman stressed that students are the backbone of the nation and must be protected from influences that destroy their future and productivity.

Holding campaign placards with clear messages such as “Say No to Drug Abuse, Stay Clean, Stay Focused, Stay Alive” and “Don’t End the Story, Rewrite It”, the Chairman reiterated that every young person deserves hope, support, and access to guidance that helps them make healthy life choices. He noted that the association will continue to use its platform to speak against drug abuse, suicide, cultism, and other social vices while promoting hope, resilience, and responsible leadership among students.

The Honourable Minister of Youth commended NANS ONDO JCC for taking proactive steps beyond rhetoric, acknowledging the role of student leadership in shaping values, promoting responsibility, and serving as first responders to challenges affecting young people. The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to partner with credible student bodies on campaigns, sensitization programs, and policy-driven interventions aimed at youth development, mental health, and social wellbeing.

The advocacy visit is part of a broader statewide campaign that includes school outreaches, stakeholder engagements, media advocacy, and peer-to-peer sensitization. The Chairman emphasized that the association will continue to work tirelessly to build a safer, healthier, and more conscious student community.

The campaign has received support from various stakeholders, who recognize the importance of addressing mental health and substance abuse among young people. Comr. Samuel Agbelusi, Chief Press Secretary, NANS ONDO JCC, stated that the association is committed to promoting hope and resilience among students.

The meeting with the Minister of Youth is a significant step towards addressing the challenges facing young people in Nigeria. The association's efforts are expected to raise awareness and inspire action among students, policymakers, and the general public.

The NANS ONDO JCC has demonstrated its commitment to youth welfare and mental health awareness, and it is hoped that this initiative will inspire other student organizations to follow suit. As the Chairman stated, “Students must understand that no challenge is worth their life and no substance is worth their future. There is always help, always hope, and always another chapter to write.”

The NANS ONDO JCC's initiative is a commendable effort towards promoting mental health awareness and combating substance abuse among young people in Nigeria. It is hoped that this initiative will inspire a wave of positive change across the country.
