The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a breakthrough in negotiations with the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, over concerns regarding hostel accommodation fees.
In a statement issued on January 21, 2026, by Comrade Anzaku Shedrack Ovye, CNS Secretary-General of NANS National, the association revealed that the management has agreed to suspend compulsory payment of hostel accommodation fees, effective immediately.
The proposed hostel fee increment has been reduced by ₦5,000, from ₦10,000 to ₦5,000, in consideration of the prevailing economic realities facing Nigerian students and their families. This decision is expected to bring relief to students who were concerned about the sudden hike.
Students who have already paid for certificate clearance receipt at the rate of ₦10,000 will not be required to make any additional payment, while new applicants will pay ₦15,000. The association has assured students that the management is committed to providing quality services and amenities in the hostels.
The management has also assured NANS that renovation works on the school hostels will commence and be completed within the next two to three weeks, to improve living conditions and overall welfare of students. This includes upgrading facilities such as water supply, electricity, and security measures.
NANS has called on students of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, to remain calm and peaceful, while urging them to cooperate with the management as they work towards resolving the issues. The association has also advised students to report any concerns or grievances to their respective student union representatives.
The association commended the Rector for his willingness to listen and engage in constructive dialogue, and reassured the Students’ Union Government of its continued support and solidarity. NANS also praised the students for their patience and understanding throughout the negotiation process.
The outcome of the negotiations is seen as a victory for NANS and a testament to the power of peaceful dialogue in resolving conflicts. The association has vowed to continue advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students.
The development is expected to bring a sense of relief and hope to students of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, and serve as a model for other institutions to follow.
